Gabriel Walking on His First Birthday

Gabriel walks for the camera. He’s been walking more and more every day, learning very quickly for the last three weeks. He took his first unassisted steps on the 25th of November and now he seems to be walking more than he is crawling.

First Steps

Gabriel, you took two and a half steps. You were methodical. You knew what you were doing. And then a few minutes later you took three more. Then a half an hour later you took 2 more. You are walking today, no assistance, and while it seems no big deal to you, we are so enthralled with your every step!

Right now we are living in a house temporarily, just outside of Portland. Kristina is looking for a job, and I am working hard on our home businesses which are making some money but have a ways to go before they are supporting us. We started in the shed outside, and stayed there for a couple of weeks, but it was pretty tough when it got colder and wetter. We moved inside as a man and his daughter were moving out. We have been here since the 15th of October and we are leaving in a  few days.

This place has figs, apples, grapes, carrots, tomatoes, parsley, kale, and more! We loved it hear, and we made good friends with Asha, though her son of just a couple of months older than you did not like you much. He hit you a lot, and he did not like you playing with his things or approaching his mommy. You were fine with that. You never seemed to care what he thought of you. And if he wanted a toy you gave it up and watched him or got a new one, even though you are stronger than him.

Gabriel with Alok behind him

In this video Gabriel is able to walk, but too excited. We took this on the same day he was taking his first steps. But the camera is just too exciting to focus on anything else.

Getting reved up, as always.

And here you are playing the recorder.

The Keyboard

Gabriel used to pound on the keyboard while I was trying to work. The dest is low and he likes to stand up and watch me type.

I would constantly move his hand away every time he did this, and try not to snap at him when he screwed up what I was doing.

Now he is doing something new. He has started mimicking me. He takes my hand off the keyboard over and over again. If he can’t play with it, no one can!

The Screaming Phase

Gabriel has entered the screaming phase. He just screams his head off almost all day sometimes. I loves the sound of it and he laughs at himself. It’s so cute and we’re not going to try and stop him but I do hope this pase ends quickly. Especially for our neighbors.

He Peed in the Toilet

It’s naked day. Thanks to Kristina’s vigilance and wits, Gabriel peed in the potty for the first time today. We’re thinking its cheaper to potty train him early than to keep buying bigger diapers. It’s probably going to be a pretty wet couple of days.

A Letter to Gabriel

Gabriel, you have two teeth now. Both are you front bottom. You stand and are perfectly capable of standing without assistance but you rarely do. You love to play, mimic, laugh, yell, share, eat, and kiss. And you absolutely adore being kissed. You do this thing when I am laying down where you crawl up to me, kiss me, then start roll over onto my face so that I kiss you all over you body, ending on the back of your neck which seems your favorite spot.

You fuss a little when mom goes to work. I work at home and when I leave you don’t care, you know I’ll be back soon. And you can tell when mom is going to work or when she is just leaving fro a few minutes. You only fuss after she has clearly gotten ready for work. But you don’t throw a fit, you make two or three noises of objection, you crawl over to me sobbing, I pick you up and hold you for a bit and then you’re good as new. Though you are never in as good a mood when mommy is gone.

You love playing with Lilly, though she is not crazy about you. And that’s understandable. All you do is hit her and pull on her hair. We’re working on it. But it’s tough, all you do to us more than half the time is hit us and pull on our hair.

You crawl quickly, it gets a little faster every day.

You still sleep with us, and if you wake up and don’t feel us right next to you, you will cry until we are right there comforting you, or until we pick you up. We’re going to keep the co-sleeping up until you let us know you’re ready for your own bed. As much as I look forward to that, I do love raising you as while you are a baby this way.

You give a nice high five and I can always make you laugh. You are my best friend, tied with mom, and I would do anything for you. I would say I hope you’re happy, but I can tell. Our communication is really pretty good. And for now as well as for your entire life, your happiness is my goal. That’s all I want for you. And I think we are off to a good start.

The following picture was taken at the farmer’s market by Kristina’s mom.

First tooth

For the last three days Gabriel has been so needy. He has demanded tons of attention and a whole lot of patience, which i am sad to say I don’t have enough of sometimes, but I am working on it.

He would not let me work. If I sat at my computer he screamed for attention.

If Kristina and I were both home he was ok, but not with just me.

He cut his first tooth. Just barely visible, the lower left central. Maybe that’s why he was so needy.

My Toothbrush

Today my toothbrush became Gabriel’s best friend. His Confidant. His security blanket. His toy, his scrubber, his cuddle buddy, his everything. He will not let go of it. He brushes his gums with it, and the floor, and, unfortunately, the dog and the toilet as well. He sleeps with it, cuddles with it, plays with it, pokes, stabs, and beats with it.

I need a new toothbrush.

The Bear Crawl

I couldn’t get it on video. Every time I tried he stopped of course. That’s what baby’s do. But he bear crawled today. Took 8 steps on his hands and feet. It was very cool and weird to watch.

He is at the bathtub fussing that he doesn’t get to shower with mommy. She will as soon as she is done washing ehr hair but Gabriel is impatient.

One Foot, One Knee Crawl

For a couple of days Gabriel was doing this one foot ready move while he crawled. It made it easier to stand or sit when ever he felt like it.
